'STORYKNOWING: A Festival and Symposium of Storytelling and Theatre with Young People'
International Centre for Arts and Narrative (ICAN)
York Theatre Royal / York St John University
22-23 April 2016

'Storyknowing' was not simply a means of sharing learning; it was an act of practice research in itself.
It sought to enable a unique dialogue that would raise questions arising at the nexus between adolescence and storytelling, and suggest answers - by bringing together diverse:
  • PEOPLE: Young people, researchers and practitioners
  • WAYS OF KNOWING: Performance, practice and theory
  • DISCIPLINES: Arts practice, mental health, education and youth work
This was - clearly - an ambitious goal, which in some senses was met and in others proved challenging.  Some reflections on ways future events could be structured so as to further deepen the dialogue, and place young people's perspectives more centrally, are shared below.

In accordance with its goals, the dissemination of the event's themes could not be through the written word alone. This 13-minute film, produced by  Fresh Label Ltd, has enabled us to share the symposium's learning both nationally and internationally, through wide networks of practitioners and researchers, and obtain their feedback, some of which is shared below.
